Tony Freakin' Batista?!?

It's official. The Nats have signed Dmitri Young. But wait! There's more!
The Washington Nationals today signed Dmitri Young and Tony Batista to minor-league contracts and invited both veterans to join their accelerated spring-training camp, a pair of surprising moves that general manager Jim Bowden said was designed both to bolster the organization's depth while also adding assets that eventually could be traded.
At least it's only a minor-league contract. Am I the only person thinking that Kasten got stuck in the snow, leaving JimBo to party-hearty?

Batista projections, for what they're worth:

CHONE: .258/.307/.432
Marcel: .245/.293/.427

I guess today's the day for signing immobile 32-year olds. Who knows what Batista can contribute these days? Oh, and yeah that is a .298 career OBP he's sporting. The best I can figure, he's Zimmerman's "backup" if he breaks camp with the team. Twins blogger extraordinaire Aaron Gleeman had the definitive take on Batista when Minnesota signed him in December 2005.

Comments:
Did you see that at Nationals.com, Ladson says that Batista is an excellent fielder? I almost fell out of my chair.
