Nats Close to Signing Dmitri Young

Happy Slush Day, Nats fans!

The Nats have apparently wasted no time in thinking up uses for the $1M they saved by beating John Patterson in arbitration. According to the Detroit Free Press, the Nationals are close to signing former Detroit Tiger 1B/OF/DH Dmitri Young to a minor-league deal.

Best-case scenario, he's Daryle Ward v2007. Worst-case he's, well, Dmitri Young. His OBP has declined every year since his .297/.372/.537 2003 campaign. He's lost time due to various ailments over the past few years as well as a two-month stay in rehab due to drug and alcohol issues last season.

If his rehab is on track, I could see him providing some pop off the bench, but I could just as easily see him getting released a month into the season.

*UPDATE*
Here are the happy happy fun projections for Young:

PECOTA: .269/.321/.450
Bill James: .274/.334/.463
CHONE: .268/.333/.470
Marcel: .268/.324/.455
ZiPS: .260/.319/.428

Thinking about this possible signing some more, I could see some kind of platoon with Travis Lee happening with Young starting and Lee providing a late-innning replacement to take advantage of his better glove. Two questions come to mind though -- A) Is Nick Johnson's recovery farther behind than we've been led to believe and B) has the organization soured on Larry Broadway that much?

Comments:
I HEARD DMITRI'S EX-GIRLFRIEND IS HAVING MENTAL ISSUES OVER HIS ASSAULT ON HER LAST YEAR.COULD THIS BE A PROBLEM?
