More Offseason Innuendo
The drums are getting louder...
It's no longer a question of if, but when Frank Robinson will be shown the door in Washington. The latest comes direct from the tarpits of the New York Post, courtesy of Yankees beat writer George King:
In 3+ seasons as a manager, all with KC, Pena owns a 198-285 record for a .410 winning percentage, worse still than FRobby's .478 career mark. Granted, Kansas City has sucked badly for as far back as I remember, so I'm willing to give Pena some leeway, but he just doesn't seem to be any better than what we've got. Maybe he's got some player development mojo that I don't know about, but aside from Beltran (whose natural gifts probably would have blossomed under anyone) I don't see anyone on those 4 Royals teams that has developed well. Angel Berroa, David Dejesus, and Ken Harvey in particular were supposedly "can't-miss" youngsters from those who haven't done anything to write home about, in my opinion.
Clement?
Word out of Boston today is that 32 year old RHP Matt Clement is likely due to go under the knife with Dr. Andrews to find out what's been ailing his shoulder. In any case, it's probable that the Sox will look to deal him in the offseason and are willing to eat some of his $9.5M salary to do it. This is the perfect situation with the Nats to swoop in on a guy in the final year of his contract that they can get cheaply and spin later for prospects or draft picks. I'd say offer the Sox a mid-level relief prospect and/or spare part (Shairon Martis? Travis Hughes? Gryboski?) and make it happen. Heck, Loretta is a free agent after the season. Deal Vidro for Clement straight up.
Get well soon, Nick!
To close today, I'll run with the ball that Bill Ladson started rolling (you'd think he'd get the address right, though). Send those cards to:

With talk that manager Frank Robinson won't be brought back next season by the Nationals, Yankees first base coach Tony Peña has surfaced as a possible replacement.Highlights of Pena's limited mangerial career include the 2003 AL Manager of the Year thanks to KC's 83-79 third-place finish in the AL Central that year after leading the division by 7 games at the All-Star break. That '03 squad was the last one before Raul Ibanez hit the road, and the 104-loss 2004 edition of the Royals was epically awful, spurring the trade of Carlos Beltran to the then-World Series bound Astros. Pena managed for less than two months in 2005 before resigning on May 10 after the Royals sputtered to an 8-25 start.According to several industry sources, Washington general manager Jim Bowden is a big fan of Peña, who managed the Royals for three-plus seasons (2002-2005) and is in his first year on Joe Torre's staff.
"I haven't heard anything," Peña said. "The only thing I am concerned with is getting a World Series ring. I have a lot of rings [but] I don't have one of them."
Yankees GM Brian Cashman said the Nationals haven't called to request permission to talk to Peña.

Welcome back!
Not sure the draft pick flipping strategy will work much longer, though; word on the street is that'll be cut from the next CBA.

I'll believe it when I see it re: the new CBA. Gotta think that the small market teams will push to keep it in.
